My friends and I booked tickets for travel to Taiwan in January of this year, due to my insistence that no visa is required anymore.  I thought that the visa-exemption applies to all Philippine passport holders, but I was so wrong.  To be eligible, a Philippine passport holder must also possess a valid visa or permanent residence certificate issued by U.S.A., Canada, Japan, U.K., Schengen Convention countries, Australia or New Zealand.  However, online registration for the exemption is required via the Advance Online Registration System for the Visitors of Nationals from Five Southeast Asian Countries to Taiwan.* Considering that I am not a holder of any valid visas issued by these first-world countries, I applied for a visa from the Taiwan Economic and Cultural Office (TECO) at the RCBC Tower in Makati City.  And it was such a breeze.

As of 27 September 2012, here are the requirements for VISITOR and BUSINESS VISA to Taiwan:

Visitor and Business Visa requirements

For those who intend to travel to Taiwan, Republic of China for a short visit, shall submit the following:
1. An online Visa Application Form (please access https://visawebapp.boca.gov.tw to fill up the Form and print them out)
2. Two (2) passport size photos 1.5”x2 with white background (taken w/in the last three (3) months)
3. Passport valid for at least six months and old passport showing previous travels
4. Birth Certificate issued by NSO
5. Marriage Contract (if applicable) issued by NSO
6. Supporting documents related to the purpose of VISIT such as :
     A. Confirmed round trip Air ticket or Booking Certificate
     B. Certificate of Employment and Letter of permission to leave from the employer
     C. Financial statements of the applicant such as:
         (1) Income Tax Return
         (2) Bank Book or Bank Statements
     D. Etc.
          7. Traveling on BUSINESS, you must also submit:
    A. Business letter or trading records from Taiwan Company
     B. Certificate of Business Name Registration and SEC RegistrationIf owner of the company
    C. Invitation Letter from Taiwan company / organization in Chinese letterhead that outlines clearly purpose of your visit and duration of your stay
    D. Official letters or request letters from concerned authorities for official trip
    E. Seminar program
   F. Certificate of Employment; Professional Identification; Company ID
   G. Other Supporting Documents if Required such as SSS contribution lists, Pay Slip etc.
8. All documents submitted to this office should be Original and with 1 photocopy
9. The applicant will be scheduled for an interview if required
Visa Fee: P2,400.00 (Single entry)/ P4,800.00 (Multiple entry)
(NON-REFUNDABLE) payable upon filing of application
Processing Time : 3 Working days
Expedite Fee for single entry : P1,200.00 / Processing Time: 1 Working Day
Expedite Fee for Multiple entry : P2,400.00 / Processing Time: 1 Working Day
Filing Time : Monday to Friday 8:45AM to 11:45 AM
Releasing Time : Monday to Friday 1: 45PM to 4:45PM
NOTE: THE TECO RESERVES THE RIGHT TO WITHHOLD THE REASON FOR THE DISAPPROVAL OF ANY VISA APPLICATION

See, the list is not so bad, but there are a lot of requirements to be had, and the visa  fee is costly, too.  The visa application for mainland China is only Php 1,400.00; for Taiwan, it's Php 2,400.00.

It must be emphasized that the Taiwan visa must be used within one (1) month from the date of its issuance, valid for fourteen (14) days after one's arrival in Taiwan.  Thus, it would be senseless to apply for a visa months before the intended departure.  It's best to apply at least two (2) weeks before the date of departure to Taiwan.  In my case, I applied one (1) week before my departure this June.  Another thing: I noticed that the date of issuance of my visa is the date I applied for one.  So, those who would be maximizing their fourteen (14)-day stay are cautioned.

Now, on to the actual visa application part.  Visa application is only entertained in the mornings, from 8:45 a.m. to 11:45 a.m., Mondays to Fridays; the afternoons, from 1:45 p.m. to 4:45 p.m., are being utilized for the release of the visas.  The TECO is located at the RCBC Tower, on the 41st floor, Tower 1.  I suggest that the applicant should arrive early, around 8:30 a.m., and head to the reception area, first floor, Buendia side.  The TECO receptionists usually arrive at that time, and when they do, sign up for the issuance of a service number; you will be directed to wait at the outdoor smoking  area near the atm machines for the release of the numbers at 8:45 a.m.  By that time, the receptionist would pass around a sheet of paper which would determine the serving sequence, and at the same time, the receptionist would hand out the service numbers to those who have already signed up earlier.  And you'd be directed to pick up your visitor's pass at the same reception area, and presto, you can now go directly to the TECO.  A note of reminder, you must leave your valid government-issued identification card at the reception area, such as driver's license, SSS or GSIS I.D., and voter's I.D., otherwise, you would be denied entrance.

In my case, I did all of the aforementioned, save for waiting at the outdoor area.  It was humid, though it was still early, so I just waited for the receptionist at the entryway of the smoking area, where it's airconditioned.  I was given my number and hey, I  was applicant number 2, and stayed inside the TECO for less than 10 minutes and I was already done.

At the application counter, just hand over your passport, the original copy of the required documents AND a set of its photocopies, including a photocopy of your passport.  If it's complete, the visa processor would return the originals to you, and would keep the photocopies and your passport.  Your name will be called for payment of the visa fee.  A receipt will be issued showing the date and time of release of your passport and visa.  Processing period is three (3)days.  However, if you want an expedited release, come back the following day, pay for the expedited fee of Php 1,200.00 to obtain your passport and visa.  For the release of regularly-processed application, the same tips for application applies, only that the time of release starts at 1:45 p.m. (handing out of the service numbers).  I arrived around 2 p.m. in the afternoon and my number was around the 60's but it only took me less than 45 minutes to secure my visa and my passport.

The address and telephone number refers to the address and telephone number of the place where you will stay, like your hotel. If you will be staying with your friend, then you will have to type in your friend's address and phone number.

Good luck!

I am not sure if Php 50000 is enough but there's no harm in trying.

Good luck!

Asian Travel Adventures said...

I really cannot give a guarantee, really. It all depends on the visa section of TECO whether to approve your application or not. But it never hurts to try and you can always seek professional advise from a travel agency to be sure.

OK na mag-apply one month before your date of departure at the most kasi valid ang visa one-month from date of its issuance.

Good luck!

Asian Travel Adventures said...

I cannot answer your query talaga kasi iba experience ko sa experience mo. But if your documents are already complete, I don't see any reason why your application will be denied.

Good luck!

Asian Travel Adventures said...

You need a bank certification. If you don't have it, you should be able to provide other financial documents such as your ITR, or perhaps, a certification of the compensation you receive from your employer.

Yes, you need another valid ID kasi you will have to leave your ID at the reception area to gain entry to the TECO.

Pwede mag-apply ng visa Mondays to Fridays, from 8:45 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. Walang office kapag holidays.

Good luck!

Asian Travel Adventures said...

Sorry for the late reply.

ITR is just one of the financial documents which you may provide. Okay lang kung wala as long na mayroon kang ibang financial documents to present. When in doubt, you can always consult with a travel agency.

Good luck!

My husband is an ofw in taiwan, he wants me to have a vacation in taiwan, this will be my first trip outside of the country (Philippines), i am unemployed and i don't have money in the bank. My husband will shoulder all my expenses. Do you think that there will be a problem in approving my visa? How much money do i need in the bank if i am going to leave alone? THANKS!

Anonymous said...

Hello, I already have a plane ticket to Taiwan, then my travel period is on Feb 9-15. I also have the requirements mentioned above (for tourist visa)especially COE and ITR coz I am currently employed. My husband and I have a joint account, which I used for the bank certificate..

My question is, my husband is an OFW in Taiwan, do I still need to submit an invitation letter from my husband and a copy of his contract/visa/work permit?

Also, I have made a hotel booking just for 1 night (near the airport) since i'll be arriving at 145 AM. Our plan is to transfer to a cheaper hotel on the following day because online booking is too expensive. Do you think it would not be an issue if I will just submit the hotel booking confirmation with 1 night stay only???

Also, we have yet to make an itinerary. I would appreciate it if you can suggest some places to visit and the best / cheap hotel to stay near tourist attractions.

Thank you!

Asian Travel Adventures said...

Yes, I think you should state that your hubby works there. It's a requirement to disclose your contacts in Taiwan. However, I don't know the answer as to the documents of your husband. Either call up the TECO to inquire or consult with a travel agent.

As to the hotel booking, I honestly don't know. I've passed hotel booking confirmation covering the entire duration of my trip.

If your hubby is an OFW there, he'll know where to take you ;-)

If you're staying in Taipei, so long as you have easy access to the MTR, you'll be fine.

For cheap accommodations and tour itineraries, you can read the Taiwan posts in my blog, head over to the PinoyExchange Taiwan travel thread.

Good luck!

hello, i need ur help. i just want to know if there is any chance for me to get a visa going to taiwan. me and my boyfriend is planning to go in taiwan. he is taiwanese and he's working here for almost 4 years. his parent want us to go there this coming chinese new year to meet me. its my first time to travel abroad. when i do research how to get a visa i read there's a lot of documents needed to avail one. my problem is i don't have such money in my bank accnt. and i'm not working for almost 3 years to get certificate of employment. if my boyfriend who's the one who go in teco and get visa for me is that possible? is there any advantage? help me, what should i do?? i am glad to hear from you soon.. thank you..

Asian Travel Adventures said...

To Airielle

Best to consult with a travel agent since you don't have the requirements but you've been invited over by your bf. Regular visa processing lang alam ko based on my experience, i.e., applicant is the one shouldering the expenses.

And better hurry! February 10 na ang Chinese New Year. Good luck!

Hi, im planning to sa Taiwan by september, manunuod lng kasi ako ng concert. So 4 days and 3 nights lng ako magstay dun. Worried lang ako kasi im no sure if my bank statements would be sufficient enough since di ko siya masyadong nagagamit and in and out ang pera. Wala din akong ITR.

Im afraid na madeny ung visa ko kasi sayang yuung pera if ever.
Gross income kasi na pumapasok sa bank ko is less than 20k monthly kasi ung iba dumadaan lng sa mga money transfer.

My dad and I will be going kaya un nga, sayang if madedeny.
Please help. Thanks,

@ Anonymous 11:59pm

I'm not really sure. Your situation is different from mine kasi for leisure ang purpose ko. You, on the other hand, is for business. So, apart from the regular requirements, you must also submit your seminar program, etc., related to your conference.

You still need to present financial documents, not necessarily a bank certificate. And, should you submit a bank cert, it should be current, issued before your date of application. Mine was dated 1 week before the date of application.

Good luck!

Asian Travel Adventures said...

@ airielle

Opps. Sorry! I applied on my own. However, Binondo-based travel agencies specifically cater to China and Taiwan tours and visa processing. If you're hesitant, you can always opt to choose the well-known travel agencies. ;-)

Good luck!

Asian Travel Adventures said...

@ yuwen

Yup, TECO entertains phone calls. They also have an officer at the waiting area ready to answer inquiries, although I am not sure of the schedule for entertaining questions, or if they do it everyday.

Hope this helps!

Asian Travel Adventures said...

@ ahsia lie

Maraming pumupunta sa Taiwan to watch concerts ang nabibigyan ng visa. The money in the bank need not be much. I think I had just over Php 20k or something the first time I applied but I had all the documents.

If you don't work, I don't think it will be a problem as long as you can prove that you will return here and that you have money to pay for your trip.

Since you'll be travelling with your dad, magkasama dapat application ninyo to show na you'll really be there for a holiday.

Good luck! Go over to the "Anyone who has been to Taiwan" thread at PinoyExchange for more tips. Madaming Pexers nakakuha ng visa to watch concerts. :-)

hi their good day

i was wondering why the travel agency handling my documents in applying a visa in taiwan isnot requiring me to buy a round trip ticket, and a hotel booking. im planning to go to visit my girlfriend in taiwan on march 5-10, the only requirements i passed is a coe containing my vacation leave for the said date and my monthly compensation of 20k, and i gave him my bank certificate amounting to 50k dated 2 weeks before actual application. would you think the embassy will issue a tourist visa, coz i,m having a fear that it would be denied

Thank you so much for taking time to post these entries and for answering back. Your blog is really helpful especially for a first-time tourist in Taipei like me. My mom is raving to go Taipei but I am hesitant to go with her at first because I thought there isn't much to see. Pero mali ako, kakabasa ko ng blog mo at ng PEX thread, andami palang pwede puntahan at kainana sa Taiwan. We'll be traveling in Sept for 3 days only. Maraming salamat uli!

Yes. Bank balance certificate is issued by the bank where you have a deposit, showing the current amount of your deposit or balance at the date you applied for one.

Of course, dapat, may bank account ka at may deposit sa bank.

As for your other questions, hindi ko alam sagutin. All I know is how to apply for a regular tourist visa based on my experience.

Thanks for dropping by!

Asian Travel Adventures said...

@ Anonymous 8:35 pm

Usually, the travel agencies require complete requirements. I do not know why did they not require you to provide hotel and airplane tickets but surely, they know what they are doing. Since you're paying them, if your visa application is denied, you can always blame them.

Anyway, hotel booking and air tickets are just among the many documents needed to prove the purpose of your visit.

Good luck!

HELLO, your post is really informative. most of my questions were answered by your post but theres still that is not answer like, my bf and I were both fresh grads (bf -2012,(me-2011) we just took a break before pursuing a medical degree. so during the said years both of us became bum and were just helping sometimes in our family business and processing our documents for medical school. we don't have any COEs to show nor bank statements because were not employed and what we have is an ATM account only. can we just write an affidavit stating that my mom will shoulder our expenses since she'll be travelling with us? and can my mom be the only person to appear at teco for our visas? by the way we already have out tickets third week of april. is it also possible that we'll go to rcbc by 1st week of april or early second week? Hi! I just want to clarify the validity of the visa. My flight to Taiwan is scheduled on April 30. However I filled out the online form today ( Mar 29 ) and I am planning to submit such on April 2. Will the visa be valid until Apr 29 or until May 2. Thank you very much!

If you are a budget traveller, better not add Taipei or Taiwan on your travel list. If you only have 20,000 pesos on your bank account, it's very unlikely that you will be granted a visa. I don't think they look at your type of job or how much you earn even if you submit a COE, or how many countries you have travelled to. The most important thing to them is how much you have on your bank account and if you own some properties to show them you really can afford the travel.I'm well travelled which showed on the stamps I have on my passport and they did not take that into consideration.

Hello, thank you for your post. I just graduated from college this April that's why I am no longer a student and I am not employed yet and that's why I don't have ITR. However, I just registered a business also this April with my name on it. It's just a small business and it is not earning yet since I have not formally started to operate my business. With that, I cannot give ITR still. The only thing I can provide is my Bank Certificate. My travel date is around first week of May.

Now, first, how can I let them know that I am just a fresh graduate so I am not earning yet and I can't provide an ITR? Will they ask for a diploma?

Can I attach a personal letter? I want to explain why I don't have ITR especially because I have a registered business already. If not, I want to be interviewed then, to be able to explain. Can request for an interview?

I have insurance, will a certificate of insurance be helpful?

Will a letter from my father be helpful stating that he provides my travel expenses, showing his employment status, instead of mine?

Were there any instances that an applicant was asked to submit unlisted documents such as those that I mentioned?

I have been to Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Macau for the past 5 years.

By the way, I am going to stay in Taiwan (hopefully) for 4 days. I will arrive at night and I will leave in the afternoon so basically, I will just tour around and spend for 2 days.

Can I submit an itinerary of my schedule and activities there? (Just going to Taipei 101 and shop at Night Market, actually)

Based on what I working here, do you think I am going to have problem in getting a visa? In what aspect? I hope you help me out with this. Thank you.

Based on what I wrote here, do you think I am going to have problem in getting a visa? In what aspect? I hope you help me out with this. Thank you.

Hi,

I'm an OFW but my contract will be ending on August 2013. I'm planning to have a vacation and to visit my Mom in Taiwan on September. By then I will be jobless so I would like to know if there's a chance that I can still obtain a visit visa with just the round trip tickets and bank statement as supporting documents.

Thank you.

it was mentioned in the requirements, "a request of leave from employer"- do we have to mention vacation in Taiwan, or just vacation, since i don't want them to know where i am going.

Your blog is very informative. :)
Just want to ask if you know, I am travelling with my mom to Taiwan soon. I plan to apply on her behalf, pwede ba yun? Or kung sino lang ba ang nagaapply ang pwede pumasok sa loob? I have a valid AU tourist visa kasi so I don't need to apply. My mom is not used to processing this kind of stuff so sasamahan ko sana siya. Also, I will sponsor my mom's expenses, do I need to present my bank statement as well?

Thanks for your wonderful post. I actually lodged my application the other day. Presented all the docs BUT just today I realized that i attached the wrong ticket

My Taipei to Manila ticket (OK!)
My Manila to Taipei ticket is year 2014 instead of 2013!

My secretary made a mistake in booking! Grrr. I already rebooked this and now corrected the flight (paid extra charges). They didnt seem to notice this when I lodged the application.

Do you think this would be an issue? is there such a thing as a pending application? or will my papers be instantly denied
